Ubuntu 8.04 Web/Mail Server 1.0 Introduction The PC is a 750MHz, 128MB RAM, 15GB HDD IBM. The Operating System is Ubuntu 8.04 Server. Apache2 Web Server software is used to serve web pages via a browser to a user either on the Internet, or as in this case, just the local network. Postfix is a Mail Transfer Agent that can use SASL authentication and TLS encryption to send emails and Dovecot is a Mail Delivery agent that can use SSL encryption. Together they provide a powerful, secure email service. This service will also only be provided on the local network. Whether that is true or not has yet to be decided. However, what has been made crystal clear is that the installation of Ubuntu Server has changed. Install the Desktop edition, then install server after wards and strip out the GUI packages. Download and install with the Server ISO. This will provide server packages on the ISO and the ability to select additional server packages to install and configure. Sudo apt-get install apache2 The main configuration file is /etc/apache2/apache2.conf. The file is made up of directives. Other files and directive options include: • default virtual host: /etc/apache2/sites-available/default • server admin email address: /etc/apache2/sites-available • listen port and IP address: /etc/apache2/ports.conf • server name: /etc/apache2/sites-available/mynewsite • document root: /var/www/index.html • error log: /var/log/apache2/error.log FTP the files that make up the website to /var/www on the Web server. In a browser URL, from another computer on the local network, type princessubuntu.home and there it is. 7.0 Ubuntu 8.04 Mail Server Postfix is a Mail Transfer Agent (MTA), a piece of software used to send emails using SMTP, simple mail transfer protocol. The MTA either passes the email on to another MTA or onto a MDA, a mail delivery agent, which delivers the email to the recipient's inbox. The MDA used on this server is Dovecot and the protocols are IMAP and POP3. The MUA, mail user agent, used is Evolution. Postfix Postfix was installed during installation but if it wasn't type. Sudo /etc/init.d/dovecot restart The server starts at boot. Now postfix is configures to send emails and dovecot will deliver them. Evolution Evolution is the default email client in Ubuntu. To set up a new account, open Evolution and from the edit menu, select preferences.
